July 2008
Fun in the Sun Kicks Off

jess at fun in the sunAn eruption of laughter, clapping and song burst  from the United Way board room as Fun in the Sun program leaders prepared for the start of another summer of fun. Training included lessons in first aid, Character Counts!, "A Day in the Life of Fun in the Sun", safety on site, planning daily activities, and much more.

June 23, 2008 marked the start of the program for the children, which included the opening of two new sites: La Cumbre Jr. High and La Patera Elementary. Program participants took part in evaluations to begin the program. Kids were tested by grade level on their reading and spelling skills by a Senior Researcher from PRES Associates. Children were also tested on their enjoyment of reading, their perception of their self-identity, family support and community support. Typically, low-income children show losses in these areas duringfun in the sun with UWSBC staff the summer months. The children will be tested once more at the end of the summer to measure the program's impact.

United Way staff members joined the kids at the Canalino site for lunch along with some volleyball, soccer and jump rope. Lunch Bunch is a volunteer opportunity which allows individuals to volunteer to spend a lunch hour eating with the kids and playing games. If you are interested in participating in Lunch Bunch, along with your fellow co-workers, please contact Joel Dinan at (805) 965-8591. Come see this program in action and contribute to the success of Fun in the Sun in the lives of these fun-loving children this summer!
Santa Barbara Bank & Trust hosts Leadership Breakfast

SBBT Breakfast 1On Thursday, June 19th, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust held a Leadership Breakfast at The University Club to thank employees who support United Way of Santa Barbara at the Leadership level (a gift of $600 or above to the annual campaign). Tom Thomas, United Way Board Chair, George Leis, Bank President, and Paul Didier, President of United Way of Santa Barbara County, all spoke to employees about United Way's latest programs and encouraged them to participate in the campaign again this year.

Santa Barbara Bank & Trust is happy to report that their Pacesetter campaign has already reached over $20,000 in employee donations from retirees and upper management.  United Way of Santa Barbara County thanks Santa Barbara Bank & Trust for their continued enthusiasm, in addition to their financial and volunteer support.

 Heritage Club Members Honored

Heritage Club Lucheon1Ruth's Chris Steakhouse hosted United Way's 23rd Annual Heritage Club Appreciation Luncheon.  Santa Barbara's newest fine dining restaurant opened its doors for a very private and intimate luncheon to honor thirty-seven Heritage Club members and their guests on Wednesday, June 11, 2008.

A delectable lunch of Filet Mignon, Crab Cake, and Roasted Chicken Breast stuffed with garlic herb cheese was served as honorees shared their stories and personal commitments to the ongoing success of United Way of Santa Barbara County.  This event was generously underwritten by Northern Trust.
 Heritage Club Luncheon2
The Heritage Club was established in 1982 to honor those forward-thinking individuals who have made provisions to leave their legacy to this community as part of their overall estate plan.  Through wisely planned gifts, they have extended their United Way support for generations to come.  Their gifts come in many forms, including Charitable Remainder Trusts, Gift Annuities, Donor Advised Funds, Pooled Income Funds, Bequests, and gifts of Retirement Accounts or Life Insurance Policies.  Heritage Club members are recognized on the Wall of Honor which is a perpetual plaque located in the main conference room of the Stuart Taylor Community Center.

Heritage Club Luncheon3United Way's Endowment and Gift Planning Services Program, under the guidance of a premier group of volunteer estate and financial planning professionals, offers a variety of techniques which are individually tailored to meet the philanthropic desires of our donors.  These gifts are invested in at least one of six Endowment Funds, which provide a solid foundation of perpetual support for United Way.  These endowments insure the future of United Way of Santa Barbara County's unique and innovative programs which are improving the lives for children, families, and seniors in our community.
