Mega Tax Day

Dons Net Cafe volunteers at Mega Tax Day

United Way of Santa Barbara County hosted its inaugural annual Mega Tax Day and Resource Fair on Saturday, February 26th.

The Mega Tax Day offered lower income families assistance in filing and preparing taxes before the April 18th deadline, and an opportunity to learn about other services provided in their community, such as Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics and the Santa Barbara Central Library.

Student volunteers from Dons Net Café of Santa Barbara High School and tax preparers from the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara filed and prepared taxes and helped community members collect tax benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. The event brought over $72,000 back into the community.  In collaboration with sponsoring banks, participants also learned about financial responsibility and money management. "It was a real feel-good day", said Lee Ann Knodel, faculty advisor to Dons Net Café.

Santa Barbara County Financial Empowerment Partnership is a community collaborative led by United Way of Santa Barbara County, in partnership with Bank of America, Community West Bank, Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara, the IRS, Montecito Bank & Trust, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, and Santa Barbara High School - Dons Net Café.

SummitLocal Leaders attend 2011 United Way Education Summit in Los Angeles

Attendees of the 2011 Education Summit

United Way of Santa Barbara County staff, local educators, and other non-profit stakeholders attended the 2011 United Way Education Summit in Los Angeles on March 22nd. The event brought together 1,200 stakeholders from communities throughout California.  Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Dr. John Deasy, and other community leaders shared their thoughts about education reform and transformation at the event.  The keynote address was given by Arne Duncan, United States Secretary of Education.

Two breakout discussions featuring panels of community leaders were held.  One focused on how teachers are currently supported and evaluated and the other focused on what it means to be a strong leader in a school setting.  Each panel included a variety of educators, business leaders, and civic leaders.

Attendees from Santa Barbara included Paul Didier, President and CEO of United Way of Santa Barbara County, Gerardo Cornejo, Principal of Carpinteria High School, Michael Rattray, CEO of United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County, local teachers, staff members of First 5 of Santa Barbara County, and other staff members of United Way of Santa Barbara County.

"One of the insights that really encouraged our group was the recognition of technology's role in the 21st century classroom," said Paul Didier.  "Our newest initiative, United for Literacy, features two major components that revolve around technology, Reading Plus and bornlearning.  Each of the Santa Barbara County attendees plays a significant role in this community-wide collaboration.  The summit really reinforced some of the research that we identified locally prior to hearing the input of these community leaders."

United Way of Santa Barbara County would like to thank the organizations that sponsored the trip to Los Angeles:  The Santa Barbara Foundation provided funding for tickets to the event and Santa Barbara Airbus provided transportation.

YLSYoung Leaders Society's "United we Read"

Volunteers at Franklin Elementary School

30 volunteers read books to students at two local elementary schools - Franklin & Aliso - with the goal of engaging students to improve their enjoyment of reading and their reading ability.

The young professional brought their favorite books to read and donate to the participating classes. The visit was a great opportunity for the students to learn about the young professional's career and education.

YLS also presented a check for $250 to Franklin Elementary School to purchase books for the school library. The money was raised through YLS's 1st Annual Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser that took place in November 2010.

Fun in the Sun - SOS Program

The Coastal Fund, UC Santa Barbara Associated Students, awarded United Way of Santa Barbara County's (UWSBC) Fun in the Sun-Summer of Service (FITS-SOS) program a $6,920 grant on March 11, 2011. This grant will go to support the efforts of 13 FITS-SOS-qualified participants who will be involved in a coastal and beach-related service-learning project in the surrounding UCSB area for 7 weeks during June-August 2011. Participants are incoming 6th-9th graders, low-income, at-risk, at or below proficient in school academics. The FITS-SOS program is part of UWSBC's more extensive, Santa Barbara county-wide program called Fun in the Sun (FITS).

In alignment with the Coastal Fund's mission "to preserve, protect, and enhance the terrestrial and marine habitats associated with the shoreline of the University of California, Santa Barbara through preservation, education, open access, research, and restoration," the UCSB FITS-SOS summer project will focus on researching, improving, and developing new methods of beach enhancement and preservation for UCSB's surrounding beaches, while also gaining the local community's support by providing volunteer opportunities and through the students' advocacy  efforts.
