Montecito Bank & Trust Achieves 30% Campaign Increase!

Montecito Bank & Trust

Montecito Bank & Trust raised more than $39,000 during their 2010 United Way workplace campaign, a 30% increase over last year's $27,000 total!  This includes increases in employee and corporate giving.

As part of their campaign, Montecito Bank & Trust held the 3rd Annual "Uniting Spirits, Bidding for a Cause" wine tasting & silent auction fundraiser.  This year's event featured 115 attendees, 120 silent auction items, and resulted in a whopping $4,834 contribution to the campaign total.  The Santa Barbara Youth Music Academy also donated their time by providing all of the evening's music.

The Solvang branch of Montecito Bank & Trust once again showed their dedication to the campaign by raising $2,560 by holding a "Jail Day" in their branch! Branch employees locked their Branch Manager, Monica Trouve, in "jail" (her office) until she came up with enough money to bail herself out. Thanks to friends and customers of the bank, she was able to raise all of that money for United Way in just a couple hours.

Montecito Bank & Trust employees also provided 38 Lunch Bunch volunteers, and taught a 4 week financial literacy lesson to approximately seventy-seven 8-14 year old children during United Way's Fun in the Sun program this Summer. In addition, 41 Montecito Bank & Trust volunteers gardened at the Santa Barbara Housing Authority and made adobe bricks for the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation for United Way's Day of Caring.

United Way thanks President & CEO Janet Garufis; the 4 Campaign Committee Co-chairs: Kim Delgado, Vanessa Dominguez, Jamie Gilles and Ambia Jeckell; and all of the employees at Montecito Bank & Trust for their continued support of United Way!

 United we Bowl

Young Leaders Society at Zodo's Bowling & Beyond

On Friday, November 19, 2010 over 60 young individuals came together at Zodo's Bowling & Beyond and raised over $2,600 for the 2nd annual "United we Read" and other valuable community programs. The event was made possible through the generosity of "The Big Lebowski" sponsors - Santa Barbara Bank & Trust and Venoco Inc.

United we Read matches young professional volunteers with a class at a local elementary school with the goal of engaging students to improve their enjoyment of reading and reading ability. The young professionals read to the students and donate books to the class or school's library. The visit is also a great opportunity for the students to learn about the young professional's career and education. Students love to ask questions and interact one-on-one with the volunteers.

Kids Network of Santa Barbara County 2010 Youth Impact Awards

Kids network

Joel Goforth, Carmen Perez, Ana Aguilar, Jenny Aguilar and Paul Didier

On Thursday, December 9, 2010, United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) staff joined parents, families, and friends at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center in Santa Maria to help the KIDS Network of Santa Barbara County recognize and honor two UWSBC Youth Groups for their contributions and impact to the Santa Barbara County community. Every year, the KIDS Network honors youth who have made a significant positive impact on their communities in Santa Barbara County. The award is known as the Youth Impact Award. Nominations are received from members of the community, and all young people ages ten through eighteen living or attending school in Santa Barbara County qualify.

The first winning group was the Don's Net Café Santa Barbara High School Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and the second winner was Fun in the Sun-Summer of Service (FITS-SOS) group for their Guadalupe Native Garden Project. Each group was given the opportunity to present their projects and programs during the event.  Certificates of recognition from 1st and 4th District Supervisors Salud Carbajal and Joni Gray, CA Senator Tony Strickland, and U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps were awarded to each group. Winners also received a $250 award for their program.

UWSBC is excited and proud of the accomplishments of these two youth groups. The positive change that each group is making in our Santa Barbara County communities now will lead to a much larger and long-term impact that will improve the lives for our communities' current and future children, seniors, and their families.

The Allergan Foundation Supports Fun in the Sun

Allergan

Paul Didier, CEO and President of United Way of Santa Barbara County and Jim Hindman, Board President, Allergan Foundation

On Wednesday October 20th, United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) received a $5,000 grant award from the Allergan Foundation for UWSBC's Fun in the Sun program.

Fun in the Sun is a highly specialized summer enrichment program for local at-risk children. The program has expanded and grown over the past decade, and United Way was able to serve over 360 children and teens at four locations from Carpinteria to Goleta this past summer.

Fun in the Sun takes kids off the streets and puts them in a safe and supportive environment where their potential can grow. In a seven-week session, at-risk youth ages 5-16 participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities creatively focused on engaging minds that would otherwise languish over the summer months. The goals are to build positive self-esteem and behavior choices, provide quality educational enrichment with an emphasis in reading achievement, and involve parents and the community in the children's activities.

The children who attend Fun in the Sun are from the neediest families in the Santa Barbara community. Thanks to our partners and generous United Way donors, the Fun in the Sun program is free to participants. These children need Fun in the Sun in order to maintain academic skills over the summer, enrich and extend their educational experiences, and increase their chances of success in school and in life.

The Allergan Foundation, created in 1998, is committed to providing a lasting and positive impact on the community. Since inception, the Allergan Foundation has granted more than $20 million to worthy causes, focusing in four philanthropic areas: the arts, civic programs, education, and health and human services.

This award will be able to help even more disadvantaged and at-risk Santa Barbara County children and youth maintain and increase their educational and behavioral skills during the summer of 2011. Thank you Allergan Foundation for your generosity and support!
