Cottage Health System Breaks Records!
 | |
Grainne Sieben, Patrice Ryan, Mary Meola & Cristy Crisenberry
|
Cottage Health System broke all of its United Way campaign giving and participation records during their 2010 football themed campaign. The campaign closed in December and collected more than $159,000 from 773 employees. This represents a 6% increase in dollars and 4% increase in participation.
As part of their campaign, the Cottage Health System team held a leadership breakfast presentation, department representative trainings, and a football themed Kick-off led by campaign chair Patrice Ryan, Vice President, Human Resources. During the kick-off employees were met with enthusiastic representatives wearing football pads, helmets, and a "Santa Barbara United" t-shirt.
Prior to the campaign, Annice Spangler and Tiana Riskowski planned a tour of the hospital for the Fun in the Sun participants. A total of 52 participants toured the Nutrition Department, the Emergency Department, listened to a talk by a pet therapist, and enjoyed lunch at Burtness Auditorium. More than 25 employees participated in this event. In addition, 67 Cottage Health employees volunteered in September for United Way's 19th annual Day of Caring.
United Way thanks President & CEO, Ron Werft; and campaign co-chairs Patrice Ryan and Mary Meola, along with the support of Cristy Crisenberry and Grainne Siben. We also thank all of the employees at Cottage Health System for their continued support of United Way!

United Way Gives 6,000 Books Away!
 | United Way partners with Movegreen, Green2Gold & FD3 Media
|
On Friday, January 21st, United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) hosted a charity book giveaway event. United Way partnered with FD3 Media, Green2Gold, and Movegreen to help assist with the event. Representatives from Santa Barbara County charities navigated through the United Way parking lot selecting cases of brand new books. The atmosphere was festive with volunteers on hand to assist the agencies with their book selections.
Some of the agencies represented at the event include CALM (Child Abuse Listening & Mediation), Lompoc Recovery Center, St. Vincent's, and Santa Barbara City College.
Sister Marie Rachelle Cruz of St. Vincent's came to find new titles for their libraries. She picked out boxes of White King and Red Queen, a non-fiction adult book about how the cold war was played out on a chess board. She repeatedly expressed her gratitude for the donations, and added "the seniors will really like these", as she was loading the books into the back of her van. Overall, approximately 6,000 brand new books were distributed as part of United Way's countywide literacy initiative, United for Literacy (UFL). "What better way to promote literacy than giving 6,000 books away?" said Joel Goforth, Director of Community Impact at United Way.
Alan Tratner of Green2Gold and Erik Haney and Patrick Wilkinson, co-owners of Movegreen, two local, environmentally focused, non-profits generously donated their time to put this event on.

How to Keep Your New Years Resolutions
 | |
YLS members following directions by Shem Brown
|
On January 25th, 2011 over 30 members of United Way's Young Leaders Society attended a professional development event at Santa Barbara Athletic Club. Joanne Bolduc, Nutritional Consultant, educated guests in properly balanced nutrition while everyone enjoyed fresh appetizers provided by Silvergreens. Shem Brown, Fitness Director & Personal Trainer, not only stressed the importance of a healthy fitness routine, he also introduced members to "Small Group Training," which focuses on strength and cardio drills to improve overall body performance.
5 Reasons for Young Leaders to work out and eat healthy: 1. Clarity and Concentration An active body has been linked to an active mind. The more consistently you exercise, the less prone you'll be to grogginess and lapses in concentration. 2. Stress Relief Exercise and eating healthy has also been shown to reduce stress. This is a combined result of the benefits of cleansing, reflection, and a physical outlet for frustration. 3. Superior Strength By exercising regularly and having proper nutrition, you will build up your muscles as well as increase your physical endurance.
4. Cleansing Sweat, along with toxins, tends to build up over time. Sweating regularly through exercises removes these toxins and will help you feel more comfortable.
5. Self Confidence The sum of all these benefits is self confidence. Exercise and eating healthy are an enormous part of reaching your potential!
