United Way of Santa Barbara County Participates in California Saves Week

California Saves

Financial Literacy Council (FLC) of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties will be participating in its 2nd Annual California Saves Week from February 20th through February 28th, 2010.   The goal of this week is to encourage thousands of individuals to save for their future, by building wealth and decreasing debt.

Santa Barbara residents can have their taxes prepared free of charge at Dons Net Café at Santa Barbara High School.  Joel Goforth of United Way of Santa Barbara County states, "The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at the Dons Net Café has been saving our community thousands of dollars by preparing taxes for free. This site has been operating successfully for over seventeen years and the Santa Barbara community benefits tremendously from this program."

The students of Dons Net Café have been making an impact in our community, not only with their incredible work with VITA but also with winning awards at trade shows, giving back to their community, but also making headlines!  Click here for an article in the Examiner about these amazing students!  And in April, the students will be partnering with Young Leaders Society for an informational interview program to learn how to reach their aspirations.

The Financial Literacy Council members consist of: Cabrillo Economic Development, El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, SurePath Financial Solutions, United Way of Ventura County, United Way of Santa Barbara County, Housing Authority of Santa Barbara, Cal Lutheran University, Ventura County Real Estate Fraud Advisory Team, Bank of America, Citibank, Community West Bank, FDIC, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Los Padres Bank, Rabobank, Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, Ventura County Credit Union, Wells Fargo, Creative Wealth International, LLC, Sigrid Hurn - Mortgage Specialist, & Holthouse Carlin.

United Way's Young Leaders Society Volunteers Refurbish Community Action Commission's Backdoor Deli!

Young Leaders Society volunteers with Tia Walker (center)

Saturday, January 30th was a huge success, thanks to the 25 volunteers who spent 8 hours prepping, painting, staining, and redecorating Community Action Commission's Backdoor Deli!   The Backdoor Deli, complete with Wi-Fi is a well-kept secret. The proceeds from the Backdoor deli helps support the Senior Nutrition program throughout Santa Barbara County, notably Mobile Meals.

"Thanks everyone for all the hard work and your sincere desire to help Community Action Commission. There were MANY positive comments about the awesome job you did! I enjoyed meeting everyone and look forward to seeing you at some of our events in the future."

Local Organizations Spin Wheels to Benefit Local Non-Profits

Bike donation

All Around Landscape delivered the donated bikes

In January, United Way's Fun in the Sun (FITS) program received a bike donation as the result of a team bonding "Build a Bike" event hosted by Citrix Online.  Citrix Online presented the twenty bicycles and helmets to two FITS Counselors in Training, who accepted the donation on behalf of the entire FITS program.

Grace Burns, Senior Manager of Events at Citrix said, "Citrix Online is proactive in philanthropic endeavors, and we try to incorporate it in our Events Programs. I love organizing events that are relevant to our business that also benefit the community and charities. Incorporating the "Build a Bike" team-building program has been very successful. We are very pleased to donate 20 bicycles to United Way's Fun in the Sun program, benefitting at risk youth in the Santa Barbara community. It is so rewarding to transform lives and provide opportunities for our youth to have a better future."

CITsThe day after the event, All Around Irrigation and Supply was there to transport all twenty bikes into safe storage until the summer. A big "Thank You" goes to these two local companies for all of their contributions to local youth!

In other news, planning for the fourteenth summer of FITS has officially begun! United Way hosted its first Partners Meeting of the year for local organizations to become involved or continue their services to the program. FITS is gearing up to deliver another summer of helping at-risk youth in Santa Barbara County and many businesses are eager to contribute to this exciting program. Look for FITS at the upcoming Kids Expo on February 27, hosted by SBparent.com. See you there!

United Way Participates in CARE Expo

Care Expo

Matthew Weisner speaks to CARE Expo attendee

United Way of Santa Barbara County participated in the annual Community Affairs Board CARE Expo, which took place at UC Santa Barbara's Corwin Pavilion on January 28th.  The Community Affairs Board student group organized this volunteer, internship, and non-profit job fair that hosted approximately 20 local non-profit organizations for an afternoon informational gathering.

Kellen Skersies, Matthew Weisner, and Jenny Lewallen from United Way of Santa Barbara County provided resources and talked with hundreds of students about United Way's summer enrichment program for low income children, Fun and the Sun, as well as many different volunteer opportunities available throughout Santa Barbara County on www.volunteersbc.org.  The event lasted from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and provided UCSB students with the information and resources they need to get involved in helping their community.

Every year the CARE Expo opens its doors to all students and welcomes local area non-profit and government agencies to recruit volunteers, interns, and employees for their programs. The event is co-sponsored by A.S. Community Affairs Board and Career Services, and seeks to increase visibility of the wide range of career options within the public sector by connecting students to important community needs, while promoting the ethics and rewards of public service.

VolunteerSBC.org To Launch Community Service Champion of the Month Program

Volunteer SBC

In partnership with the Santa Barbara News-Press and Tri-Valley Trophies, United Way will grant the Community Service Champion of the Month award to one Santa Barbara County resident who has shown exceptional commitment to volunteering in our community.

Each month, United Way will choose one winner from among the nominations submitted by local non-profits.  A news article will then be run about him or her in the Santa Barbara New-Press and posted on the site www.volunteersbc.org.  The winner will also receive a plaque donated by Tri-Valley Trophies in a ceremony held at United Way's office.  If you would like to nominate an exceptional volunteer, visit www.volunteersbc.org.

By highlighting outstanding volunteers in our community, United Way, Santa Barbara News-Press and Tri-Valley Trophies hope to encourage people to make a difference in their community...and beyond.
