In This Issue... County of Santa Barbara Breaks Own Record
|
On January 5, 2007 Santa Barbara Bank & Trust’s President and CEO Tom Thomas along with Chairman Ed Birch presented a check to United Way of Santa Barbara County’s CEO Paul Didier and Director for Special Projects Charles Caldwell at Santa Barbara Bank and Trust’s corporate headquarters. Santa Barbara Bank and Trust had a very successful United Way campaign in July lead by Fred Clough and Mary Jean Vignone. Like every year, Santa Barbara Bank and Trust had an enthusiastic employee committee that organized several fun events such as Candy Gram Sales, a Book Fair, Jeans Day, and employee involvement in Fun in the Sun, a summer enrichment program sponsored in part by United Way of Santa Barbara County. The employee campaign collected over $146,000 in addition to the corporate gift of $68,300. Steve Ortiz from United Way of Santa Barbara County said “organizations like Santa Barbara Bank and Trust and their employees help us achieve our mission by volunteering and providing the funds needed to help valuable programs in our community.” Thank you Santa Barbara Bank and Trust for a job well done!
The UCSB United Way campaign kicked off on Thursday, January 18. Last year the UCSB campaign raised more than $114,000, while this year’s goal has been set a bit higher at $120,000. Dave Bothman from the Engineering department has volunteered to take the reins as this year’s Campaign Committee Chair. The Campaign Committee is responsible for securing raffle prizes, organizing campaign events, handling candy-gram sales, and helping United Way staff spread information throughout the campus. Dave is joined on the committee by Marilyn Cordray, Gretchen Falvo, Sandra Featherson, Betty Huff, N.J. Kittle, Pam Lombardo, Julie Rasmussen, Pat Sheppard, and Jenise Stallion. To build excitement for this year’s campaign and update the UCSB Department Reps, United Way held two trainings on the campus. The trainings were held on January 10 and January 11 at the Corwin Pavilion. Each training was attended by more than 50 volunteers from the UCSB workforce, volunteers eager to help United Way reach this year’s goal. In addition to organizing presentations in many departments, the UCSB Reps will also help coordinate Volunteer Day and candy-gram sales (now a tradition at UCSB). Last year Volunteer Day was a success with over 30 staff and students offering their services to help two local non-profit child-care organizations (Orfalea Family Children’s Center and Isla Vista Youth Projects). Candy-gram sales last year accounted for about $5,000 of the $114,000 campaign total.
County of Santa Barbara employees raised $268,169 during the 2006 Charitable Giving Campaign. That total eclipsed United Way’s previous all-time largest employee campaign, held since 2002 by the County of Santa Barbara. 2006 Campaign Chair Kathy Gallagher celebrated the success with several outstanding campaign volunteers, including her Co-Chairs, Bob Nisbet and Carrie Topliffe, at a thank you reception held at United Way on January 26. Not only did the County break the all-time record, the campaign increased by over $20,000 (8%). Some factors for the increase were easy to count: 50% more presentations to employees, three County Fun Days this year instead of two last year, cookbooks sold for $5 each for the first time, and a 5% increase goal for each department. The most important factor was harder to gauge: the enthusiasm of the volunteers and employees. The Department of Social Services (DSS) led the pack with a 32% increase, thanks to Lead Rep Davida Willis, a cadre of Site Reps, and participation from DSS employees. DSS held fun events like a chili cook-off and raffles for donors. Other departments, such as Public Health and Planning & Development, followed suit with presentations and fun events.
