United Way of Santa Barbara County Launches Young Leaders Society!

The newest of United Way's proactive groups is geared toward the increasingly influential young individuals in our community. United Way's Young Leaders Society (YLS) was formed to support the goals of emerging leaders aged between 20 and 40. The goal of YLS is to promote and encourage philanthropy and volunteerism in our community. To engage and inspire these young business and community leaders, members can participate in a variety of social, educational, volunteer, and network opportunities. Membership will be offered to individuals or couples of 40 years of age or younger, contributing a combined annual gift of $300 or more. Together these young professionals actively seek ways to connect, serve and lead. They participate in and organize activities throughout the year centered on education, community service and networking. Young Leaders Society members are committed, compassionate, and generous people who support the work of United Way of Santa Barbara County and its efforts to advancing the common good in the community. The Young Leaders Society currently has a few Executive Committee member positions available. The committee will provide innovative ideas and leadership to YLS members offering the opportunity to make direct change in people's lives, network with each other, and ultimately become leaders in our community and beyond. The deadline for Executive Committee enrollment is February 2, 2009. If you are interested in being a member of Young Leaders Society or its Executive Committee, please contact Steve Ortiz at sortiz@unitedwaysb.org or Juli Askew at jaskew@unitedwaysb.org or 805-965-8591.

Santa Barbara Tea Fire Response Fund To Begin Disbursement of Funds
The Santa Barbara Tea Fire Response Fund, a collaborative community partnership formed in the days following the devastating Tea Fire, is ready to begin disbursing the funds that have been so generously donated. The fund to date has raised over $400,000. People affected by the fire may apply for assistance at the American Red Cross, 2702 State St. from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Funds will be distributed based on a two-tiered system where a public-private partnership will provide screening at the social worker/case manager level and an oversight committee of local leaders will provide direction and assurance that all monies are used appropriately. United Way of Santa Barbara County is acting as the fiscal agent, handling the monies for the fund. United Way is not charging for this service and 100% of all donations will go for services to Tea Fire survivors. The Tea Fire Response Fund is committed to the long term recovery of the community. As such disbursements will be made throughout the year as unmet needs continue to be identified. United Way of Santa Barbara County would like to thank all those who donated their time, effort, and money to help those affected by the Tea Fire. Working together we can rebuild communities.
If you have any questions or would like to contribute to the Tea Fire Response Fund, please contact Joel Goforth, at 965-8591 x 136, or email at jgoforth@unitedwaysb.org.

Charitable Gift Annuities - A Good Investment
With CD rates paying around 2%, it makes sense for seniors to consider alternative investments. United Way of Santa Barbara County offers Charitable Gift Annuities which are secured by the assets of this organization, and will pay a lifetime income to our donor(s) based on their age(s). The payments are fixed no mater what happens with interest rates in the future, and the donor receives a charitable tax deduction in the year the contract is entered into. The following rates are available until January 31, 2009:
Age of Rate of
Donor Return 60 5.5% 70 6.1% 80 7.6% 90 or over 10.5% Plus, part of the income would be tax-free. It is easy to set up a Charitable Gift Annuity!
Jeanne Brown (pictured right) says, "I enjoy receiving the 6.6% guaranteed income every month without having to worry about it!"
Visit our website at www.unitedwaysb.org/giftplanning where you can run your own Gift Annuity illustration by clicking on CALCULATOR and then clicking on CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY. The American Council on Gift Annuities has announced that Gift Annuity rates will go down on February 1, 2009, so if you are thinking about investing in a Charitable Gift Annuity, now is the time to inquire.

Santa Barbara High School's Dons Net Café To Provide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Beginning January 15, 2009, Dons Net Café will provide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) services for individuals of low-income, no social security, and/or students. Service providers are bi-lingual.
Students of the high school have been trained to assist people with filing taxes free of charge. VITA began eight years ago and has quickly become successful due to the fact that the students involved gave much time and effort. Santa Barbara High School became the first school awarded an Electronic e-filing number, gaining recognition, but unfortunately not great economic support. All along we have known that we wanted to be a good cause and remain free of charge to the individuals needing our assistance. This is the reason VITA has remained successful, it is unique in that in contrast to any establishment providing the same service this is free of charge. Located on Santa Barbara High School campus, room #22, VITA operates on Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information call 805-963-8597.

Bacara Resort & Spa Donates Luxury Items to
Local Women in Need
Paula Acosta with Bacara staff (pictured above)
Bacara Resort & Spa very generously donated a large Gift in Kind to us this December. We received 6 boxes of high-end items from their Luxury Boutique and Spa Shop. The new clothes are beautiful and will be much appreciated by the women who will receive them. The clothes included casual wear, workout gear, swimsuits and dresses. Bacara also sent along some spa items that went to the women residents of Transition House. The gifts-in-kind will help local women in our community. Thank you so much to Bacara Resort & Spa for your kindness! This shows that there are many ways to give back to our community that have a positive and lasting effect.
