Loading TruckThe Territory Ahead Donates Over $400,000 Worth of New Clothing to United Way

The Territory Ahead
, a clothing company headquartered in Santa Barbara, recently donated brand new clothes to four different United Way organizations located in Santa Barbara, San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area, and Cincinnati, Ohio.  The clothing donation, valued at $400,000, will provide 13,428 units of clothing (pants, shirts, and jackets) for distribution to poverty level citizens in cities where the company operates, rather than sell the product to a retailer for profit.

The value of the units to be distributed in Santa Barbara County is approximately $195,000.

One multi-agency program benefiting from the donation is United Way of Santa Barbara County's Fun in the Sun, a summer enrichment program for poverty-level children in southern Santa Barbara County.  600 parents of Fun in the Sun children will receive free clothing thanks to the generous donation.  Another United Way partnership, the Pre-Kindergarten Summer Institutes, will distribute the clothing to families who have difficulty meeting basic needs. LuAnn Miller, Executive Director of Isla Vista Youth Projects, and Theresa Weissglass, Executive Director of Healthy Start and A-OK Programs, will take the lead in identifying families in need and matching those families with free clothing. Miller said, "Clothing is a real need for these families and will go a long way in helping them meet basic needs."

This large-scale clothing donation by The Territory Ahead illustrates the effect that local companies and services, working together, can have on low income and poverty level families by addressing basic needs like clothing, along with long-term programs such as child education and drug rehabilitation. President and CEO of United Way of Santa Barbara County Paul Didier stated, "We are proud to help The Territory Ahead distribute these needed clothes to families that can use them. Our Power of Partnership-- connecting the best resources of our community--- allows us to impace poeple in the most effective way."

Thank you to The Territory Ahead for your generosity, along with Scott Williams of Prudential California Realty who donated the truck used for the donation distribution.
Bank of SBRaffle Prizes Boost Campaign

Bank of Santa Barbara
entered its second year in town as United Way veterans.  Last year, they raised over $2,000 from their new office of 12 staff.  This year's campaign promises to be even more successful.  Bank of Santa Barbara opens their raffle to clients and friends, selling chances to win prizes like Sunday brunch at the Biltmore, gift certificates to Holdren's and Ahi Sushi, and massages from Jackie Sugich and Playa del Sol.  Tickets are $2.50 and are available until the raffle drawing on May 11.  Last year, the raffle and special events raised over $800.  This year, Campaign Manager Jim Turner and the staff of Bank of Santa Barbara brought in as many prizes as employees for the raffle.

Andy Clark and Jim Turner kicked off this year's United Way campaign with a presentation to all staff.  Andy shared about his involvement with United Way and his Executive Club membership, and staff talked with the United Way representative about local programs supported through United Way.  To date, staff pledges raised $1,250 to support community programs for children, families, and seniors.  Special events make up a good portion of the total, through the raffle and Jeans Days for employees.

Last year, Bank of Santa Barbara won an award for Best New Campaign at our Annual Awards Celebration.  This year's campaign is poised to eclipse last year and become Bank of Santa Barbara's largest campaign yet.

Exxon Golf TournamentExxon Mobil Golfs for United Way

Exxon Mobil

recently held an employee golf tournament to raise money for United Way of Santa Barbara County, the first of two tournaments that will take place during this year's annual campaign.  40 Exxon employees hit the links at The River Course at Alisal to have fun, support a good cause, and win prizes.  The tournament was coordinated by Cynthia Gibson, Exxon's Employee Campaign Manager, and Greg Manuel, the top golfer in this year's field (according to most participants).

In addition to running a strong employee campaign and two golf tournaments each year, Exxon continues to hold other special events.  This year the company plans to hold a bake sale, silent auction, cookout, and spare-change challenge.  Throughout the years, Exxon Mobil has been very supportive of United Way of Santa Barbara County, and we thank them for continuing with efforts to make this community stronger.
