UCSB Freshens Up Community

UCSB held its second annual United Way Volunteer Day as part of their 2006-2007 Annual Campaign "Make it Personal". Volunteer Day was held at two sites; Isla Vista Youth Projects and The Orfalea Family Children’s Center

On February 24, 2007 Isla Vista Youth Projects (IVYP) hosted UCSB volunteers who signed up to help out with odd jobs such as painting lines in the parking lot and sweeping the fenced–in outdoor play area, as well as cleaning walls and windows in the classrooms. In four hours, the volunteers were able to complete the entire list of projects the site had lined up for that day. IVYP, located on Phelps Road, provides critical services for children of all ages and backgrounds.

Two weeks earlier, The Orfalea Family Children’s Center hosted about 25 volunteers to do similar jobs. The Orfalea Center provides child care for university employees, students, and community families. Some of the projects at this site included freshening up the sand box, washing the outside of the building, and cleaning indoor hallways and classrooms.

Both sites were very grateful for all of the help these volunteers provided. Thank you UCSB employees for partnering with United Way to create a better community!

Sansum Clinic Makes It Happen

United Way of Santa Barbara County's Chris Schwass recognizing Sansum Clinic's Campaign Chair Sue Bouma for her hard work during the campaign.

Sansum Clinic wrapped up another impressive employee campaign on February 23.  The clinic beat its previous record of $38,101 with the new total: $39,075.  Before the campaign started, employees held a campaign slogan contest, with the winning slogan being: “Together, We Can Make it Happen!”  Paul Jaconette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Sansum Clinic, held a presentation and encouraged management to set the example as leaders in helping the community.  Jaconette continued the Denim Day tradition on January 24th and Valentine’s Day.  Both days were a big hit and together raised over $1,800.  Shawn Marshall, Denim Day Chair, handled the event and distributed Denim Day stickers to Team Leaders across the clinic.

32 Team Leaders volunteered to make this year’s campaign a success by setting presentations, reminding employees about upcoming events, and tracking down prizes for employees who attended presentations.  United Way provided a donation request letter, but some Team Leaders hit the town on their own and snagged great giveaways.  Mark Ortgies, Raffle Chair for the campaign, tracked down major prizes for the Grand Raffle.  All donors were entered into a raffle for yoga classes, electric car rentals, hotel stays, a Big Bear cabin weekend (donated by Ortgies himself), and a Chumash Casino Resort spa, hotel, and dinner package for two, to name a few.

Sue Bouma stepped in as the new Campaign Chair and added energy and excitement to this year’s campaign.  She learned the ropes quickly and oversaw the biggest campaign in Sansum Clinic’s history!  Dr. James McNamara, Physician Chair for the campaign, helped increase physician participation from 13 physicians last year to 28 this year!  Thanks to the campaign committee and support from employees, Sansum Clinic is putting almost $40,000 to work for local children, families, and seniors.
