News Releases/Media Contact-United for Literacy Open House

Mary and Blas Garza with Theresa Weissglass

On Thursday, February 10, 2011, United Way held it’s first United for Literacy (UFL) Open House at the United Way offices. Those in attendance were impressed and pleased to see and experience first hand the various UFL programs.

Attendees stepped into the portable Parent Empowerment/Education classroom where Parent Empowerment/Early Education Program Director Theresa Weissglass gave them an update on how the program is impacting whole families with parenting skills workshops that stress education in all family interactions.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library spoke volumes to folks that saw the quality of the books that registered children receive in their mail boxes every month from birth until they enter kindergarten.

Guests took Reading Plus virtual tours and tried on the Visagraph goggles that measure a persons eye movements while reading. This helps teachers and students identify eye movement issues that may be impairing the student’s opportunity to improve reading skills.

One attendee asked, "Where’s the press? This is so interesting and important to the community!" Another guest brought his daughter in to have a Reading Plus assessment taken. We hope that more United Way supporters will attend our next event, as the entire community of school children and adults can benefit from these programs, not just the disadvantaged.
