The Verizon Foundation Supports Fun in the Sun 2008

Verizon

Paul Didier, Holly Cole, Tom Thomas

Last week The Verizon Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant to United Way of Santa Barbara County for the 2008 Fun in the Sun program.  Since Fun in the Sun started in 1997, Verizon has provided corporate gifts totaling more than $130,000 in addition to pledges made by Verizon employees.  Verizon's support, combined with that of other community organizations and individuals, has enabled Fun in the Sun to expand and serve more than 350 children each summer.

"Verizon has long been committed to philanthropy with a purpose, using our financial, human and technological resources to improve the quality of life in the communities where our customers and our employees live and work" said Holly Cole, Director, Government and External Affairs for Verizon.  "The children are our future.  Verizon's investment in the Fun In The Sun program allows those attending to experience an educationally enriching summer program geared at improving reading and academic skills."  Verizon is delighted to partner with United Way on the shared goal of increasing academic achievement.

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its signature program, Thinkfinity.org.  In 2007, the foundation awarded more than $67.4 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the United States and abroad. The foundation also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $25.1 million in combined contributions. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation's largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered more than 3 million hours of community service since Verizon's inception in 2000.

United Way thanks Verizon and its employees for their continued support!

Red Binder Project Underway!

La Cumbre Junior High

Paul Didier, Executive Director of United Way of Santa Barbara County recently delivered 50 red binders to La Cumbre Middle School Principal JoAnn Caines (right)

Through more than 25 years of extensive research, the Search Institute of Minnesota has identified 40 Developmental Assets that have been proven to contribute to the healthy development of young people. These Developmental Assets are concrete, positive experiences and personal qualities that youth need to grow up strong, caring, and responsible. Research reveals that the greater number of Developmental Assets experienced by young people the more positive and successful their development.

The Red Binder Project is a simple, asset building activity which increases the number of assets a youth possesses and promotes positive relationships between teachers and students. It provides the opportunity to develop a youth-adult partnership based on interests that are non-academic. Individual, uninterrupted attention during scheduled time is given to students who are then encouraged to share their interests and aspirations.

Purposeful and intentional asset-building can occur easily on a school campus. Very little time is required for this type of asset building and is likely to result in youth that exhibit successful outcomes related to leadership, good health, valuing diversity, and academic achievement.

My Healthy Child

Energetic and Caring Volunteers Needed to Support My Healthy Child Project!

Do you have a few extra hours a week?  Do you have a passion for children?  Do you have a reliable car and an upbeat personality?  United Way of Santa Barbara County is looking for a few volunteers to deliver and replenish brochure stands and support the launch and completion of the My Healthy Child Project.

Brochure stands with educational materials will be presented to several county-wide clinics, including Eastside, Westside & Isla Vista Neighborhood Clinics; Children's Medical Clinic; Sansum Pediatrics and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Volunteers would refill stands on a monthly basis and offer support for any questions or issues that arise.  This would be a great opportunity for those interested in pediactrics, child development, and/or community health.  Internship credit or community service hours options are available.  Materials and training will be provided.  Volunteers must be available to launch project in late November or early December .

Please contact Jeanette Delgado for more information at (805) 965-8591 x107 or jdelgado@unitedwaysb.org.

Wells Fargo Gives Generous Gifts of Time and Money for 2008 Campaign

Wells Fargo

Paul Didier, Barbara Ford and Patrick Nygren

On Wednesday, November 5th, Patrick Nygren, Vice President and District Manager of Ventura and Santa Barbara Wells Fargo Bank, presented United Way of Santa Barbara County CEO Paul Didier with a check for $7,750.00.  This includes a $5,000.00 sponsorship for United Way's Fun in the Sun program, a summer enrichment program for poverty level, academically at-risk, or homeless children in our community, and a $2,750.00 sponsorship for this year's Red Feather Ball.  The gift, to be applied to this year's Wells Fargo community campaign, reflects the company's long-standing commitment to the community here in Santa Barbara County.

Over the past five years, Wells Fargo employees have contributed nearly $80,000 during the annual charitable giving campaign, making Wells Fargo one of our top supporters year after year.

In addition to supporting these areas financially, Wells Fargo employees have continued to take part in volunteer work this year.  In July, the company sent a team of volunteers to "Lunch Bunch," the volunteer portion of FITS.  The employees spent their lunch breaks for three days at Franklin School and acted as mentors for program participants.  The group brought the kids cookies and popsicles and gave the children some much-needed attention.  The company also participated in United Way's Day of Caring in September, the largest volunteer event each year in the tri-county area.

"Wells Fargo is proud to partner with United Way of Santa Barbara County to provide critically needed services for those who need it the most," said Marla Vasquez, Wells Fargo Community Bank regional president for the Pacific Coast.  "Our team members understand that in order to be successful in business, we must support the communities we serve.  We appreciate the important work of United Way in this community."

Thank you to Heather Hoffman, Barbara Ford, Marla Vasquez, and Patrick Nygren for making these gifts of time and money possible!

Costco Kicks off some Yummy Campaigns!

costco

This year Costco held several fun events for their annual workplace campaign. The campaign was led by store manager Kent Wells with the assistance of one of his Marketers, Berta CiFuentes

The first event for Costco employees was a pizza day, the second was Nacho Day, and the third was an Ice Cream Social!  All three events allowed the United Way campaign team to raise awareness about United Way of Santa Barbara County which ran in conjunction with the national United Way campaign.  The United Way national account featured an online donation tool directly on the Costco website!

United Way wants to thank all Costco employees for being eager to help support the community and having positive civic minded attitudes. Thanks again Costco!
