Lee Foster is Honored with 2010 Young Leader of the Year Award!

40 Under 40 Awards

Paul Didier, President and CEO of United Way of Santa Barbara County, Genevieve Lund, Lee Foster, Steve & Amber Ortiz, Jennifer Parkes and Sarkes Khacheck

On Monday, October 18, 2010, Pacific Coast Business Times hosted the "40 Under 40" dinner and awards reception at the Topa Tower Club in Oxnard, honoring up-and-coming leaders in the Tri-Counties. United Way's Young Leaders Society also awarded one of its members with the 3rd annual Leader of the Year award.  The honoree is an individual who has excelled in their line of business and philanthropic duties, including some United Way activities.

Our Young Leader of the Year, Lee Foster, is Vice President and Performance Metrics Manager with Pacific Capital Bancorp. In his role, Lee is responsible of reporting, analysis and modeling tasks.  Lee recently finished his second year at Pacific Coast Banking School in Seattle, Washington.

He has been a very active member of United Way of Santa Barbara County. He is a member of United Way's President's Circle and a repeat volunteer for United Way's "Day of Caring" and "Fun in the Sun" programs.

Lee is also an active member and volunteer with the Young Leaders Society of Santa Barbara County, Food Bank, Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
14th Annual Red Feather Ball was truly a "Fanta-Sea"!

 AGIA at Red Feather Ball

AGIA Insurance at the Red Feather Ball

Close to 250 attended this year's undersea themed Red Feather Ball on Saturday, October 23, 2010 to honor and recognize the philanthropic and volunteer contributions of Jelinda DeVorzon and AGIA Insurance Services.

Guests were wowed by the voice of Jimmy Demers, who opened the evening, and brought to happy tears at the end by Barry DeVorzon as he played and sang his original music, "Jelinda's Song," to his wife of 39 years. In between, dancing throughout dinner was encouraged and enjoyed to the tunes of Art Deco & His Society Orchestra.

Touted by many to be the most beautiful and fun Red Feather Ball, the Fess Parker DoubleTree ballrooms were transformed into a sea of shimmering turquoise,  punctuated by red and white coral, and floating candles on the tables.  Host, Ann Gursey brought her own high energy to the stage to keep the evening moving and did a great job as the scholarship auctioneer for Fun in the Sun and Reading Plus after the heartfelt and moving visit on stage by Fun in the Sun participant, Trevor Garvin and his mom, Lori.

Co-Chairs Bui & Herb Simon and Anne & Michael Towbes not only lent their names to the event but were major sponsors in attendance as well.  We were honored that Herb would consent to spend his birthday helping the community.  So, it was our pleasure to surprise him with a cake and champagne supplied by Barry & Jelinda. Herb was completely caught off guard as everyone was led in "Happy Birthday, dear Herb" by the band.  How's that for a surprise birthday party?

The attention was turned back to our honorees at the end of the evening to acknowledge their many contributions of Time, Talent & Treasure.  John Wigle, President & CEO of AGIA Insurance Services and Jelinda DeVorzon were gracious in their remarks.  It was easy to see why United Way of Santa Barbara County chose to honor them with the 2010 Abercrombie Community Excellence Awards.

SBCC's Team Ranks Number One for Volunteers at United Way's Day of Caring

SBCC ASL Class at La Cumbre Junior High

SBCC ASL Class at Day of Caring

Santa Barbara City College took top honors for the largest volunteer group participating in the United Way's Day of Caring on Saturday, September 25.  Over 200 SBCC students, faculty, staff, friends and family turned out in force and went to six worksites. United Way thanks the team co-chairs Paul Bishop and Lisa Lopez.

The largest group of 100 worked on a landscape project on campus for the college's Environmental Horticulture Department.  The American Sign Language Club had 40 members who spent the morning working on a landscaping project at Goleta Valley Junior High. A group of 40 other students, representing Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society, and the Ambassadors' Club, composed of international students, came together to paint at CASA.  Other Day of Caring sites hosting SBCC volunteers were Arts from Scrap, Habitat for Humanity, and the Isla Vista Projects Children's Center.

"This turnout for Day of Caring was significant," said SBCC Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban.  "It clearly demonstrates the campus community's commitment to helping both the college and the nonprofit organizations that assist those in need year-round.  I especially want to thank Paul Bishop and Lisa Lopez for getting the word out and energizing all this support."

United Way of Santa Barbara County Runs Largest United Way Campaign Ever!

Joel Goforth

Joel Goforth, Community Impact Director

The staff at United Way of Santa Barbara County has run its largest campaign ever, passing $17,000! 100% of the staff participated in this year's campaign.

Festivities included an all-staff presentation with a guest speaker, Sal Williams of La Cumbre Junior High School.  Additionally, a bean bag toss tournament was held for all employees who wished to participate.  The lucky winner of the tournament was Joel Goforth, Community Impact Director.

The campaign was a fun, positive team-building activity in a very challenging year.  We hope other workplaces will experience the same positive effects that United Way of Santa Barbara County's employee campaign had as we near the end of 2010!
