15th Annual Red Feather Ball
 | |
Ron & Marlys Boehm, Eric Boehm with guest Judy Pochini, Becky Snyder ABC-CLIO and Paul Didier, UWSBC
|
A successful gala event raising money for United Way's United for Literacy Programs and honoring Eric, Ron & Marlys Boehm and ABC-CLIO and Mario & David Borgatello and MarBorg for over 125 combined years of community business, service and philanthropy.
Thanks to the generous support of individual and corporate sponsors and three anonymous donors with additional and/or matching gifts, the 15th Annual Red Feather Ball held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort concluded as one of the top 3 Red Feather Balls in history, with over $260,000 raised for United Way Literacy programs.
The success of the event and the support received from those in attendance will allow United Way to expand the award winning Fun in the Sun summer enrichment program and the Reading Plus scholarships available in our community. Twenty-five Santa Barbara county schools and 4 after-school programs serving more than 3500 students are experiencing exceptional reading results. Now, thousands more local students will have the life changing opportunity to experience academic success.
The gala started with a salute to Eric Boehm, 92 and Mario F. Borgatello, 93. These patriarchs started businesses that have employed thousands of local people, do business with dozens of local professionals and vendors, and are successfully run by second and third generation family members who are committed to giving back to the community and education in so many ways.
Art Deco & His Society Orchestra had the dance floor packed during and after dinner. Debbie Davison Phelps and Andrew Firestone added grace, humor and results to the program and auction.
The evening culminated in the presentation to the 2011 recipients of the Abercrombie Community Excellence Award to Eric, Ron & Marlys Boehm and ABC-CLIO and Mario & David Borgatello and MarBorg Industries for decades upon decades of philanthropy and service to our communities. back to top

If you are over age 70½, the Federal government permits you to rollover up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity without increasing your taxable income or paying any additional tax. These tax-free rollover gifts could be $1,000, $10,000 or any amount up to $100,000 this year.
The IRA rollover gift is a simple and easy way to provide for your favorite charity while not increasing your taxable income. Simply contact your IRA custodian and request that an amount be transferred to United Way of Santa Barbara County. Charity receives a nice gift, you avoid any additional tax and satisfy your required minimum distribution for the year.
The IRA Charitable Rollover has not been extended to 2012, so your transfer must be completed no later than December 31, 2011. Contact Judy Goodbody, Gift Planning Services Officer for more information at 965-8591 Ext.120 or email jgoodbody@unitedwaysb.org or visit our website at www.unitedwaysb.org/giftplanning

Cottage Breaks Record Again
 | |
Fun in the Sun Participants visit Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
|
Once again, Cottage Health System's United Way employee campaign broke both their giving and participation records. This year's campaign raised a over $175,000, a 10% increase over last year from 805 employees. This campaign highlights how Cottage employees are dedicated to give back to their local communities. Keeping with the tradition of an engaging and exciting campaign theme, this year employees were swept away to the islands with Hawaii 5.0. This theme aimed to raise employee participation by 5%. Department Representative trainings were filled with leis, palm trees and Hawaiian music: Leis were even handed out to Cottage employees on the morning of the campaign kick-off! In addition, many employee presentations were lucky enough to have Campaign Chair Mary Meola Administrative Director of Surgical Services, drop by in her full Hawaiian ensemble of a grass skirt, leis, and straw hat! This year's record breaking success didn't stop with financial contributions - Cottage employees also turned out in record numbers for the 20th Annual Day of Caring! Nearly 90 Cottage Health System employees volunteered their time to make our community better and had a blast doing it. Also, over the summer, Tiana Riskowski, Administrative Project Coordinator, once again planned a successful Hawaiian-themed visit for nearly 60 Fun in the Sun participants. On two different field trips students visited with the therapy and security dogs, took tours of multiple Cottage departments and ate a delicious lunch outside on the 6th floor patio. A BIG, heartfelt thank you goes to this year's Co-Chairs Mary Meola and Herb Geary, as well as Grainne Siben and Linda McIntosh, without whom the campaign would have never achieved the success it did! back to top

College Tours Galore!

Fun in the Sun Participants checking out the touch tanks at UCSB
|
A mainstay for Fun in the Sun (FITS) field trips: College Tours! Throughout the summer, FITS participants took trips to SBCC, UCSB, and Westmont College. The goal of these tours to local colleges is to expose FITS participants to higher education and careers to improve their future.
For some participants, this is the first time anyone has ever spoken with them about the benefits of a college degree. For others, this is the first opportunity they have had to explore a college campus that is practically in their backyard. It's a great curriculum piece to FITS that can leave a lasting impression on the students!
At UCSB, participants experienced the rock wall at the RecCen and visited the touch tanks. They also had the opportunity to ask questions about college, such as how to enroll and what a day in the life of a college student is like. Some tours even included a day of fun on the beach!

Reading Plus Roundtable
 | |
Mike Nissenson, UFL Volunteer, Christie Alarcon, Good Samaritan, and Terry Jordan, Vanderburg Middle School raffle prize winners at United for Literacy's Reading Plus Roundtable.
|
On the evening of November 7th, 2011, United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) gathered educators, youth service agencies and community volunteers on behalf of the United for Literacy (UFL) Reading Plus Roundtable at Fess Parker's Doubletree. The goal of this biannual event is to collaborate resources and best practices used throughout Santa Barbara County to engage and motivate students in United for Literacy's Power Reading program.
Power Reading is one of three UFL strategies used to engage third grade students and beyond to "read at or above grade level, at every grade level" by increasing silent reading and comprehension skills. Reading Plus is the technology tool used by United for Literacy partners to accomplish this goal. United for Literacy's Power Reading program and partnerships are currently implemented at local school sites during the academic day and year, in addition to after school and summer enrichment programs at 37 sites throughout Santa Barbara County.
The Fall 2011 Reading Plus Roundtable had approximately 52 United for Literacy Partners in attendance and was an evening reception filled with dynamic best practice sharing and enrichment development for education professionals and volunteers in Santa Barbara County. Featured Speakers included Adena Zender, teacher at Vandenburg Middle School, Rachel Wolpo, Volunteer Recruiter at United Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara County, and DJ Ware, Regional Representative of Reading Plus.
