The 2011 Abercrombie Award for Community Excellence will be honoring Eric, Ron & Marlys Boehm and ABC-CLIO and Mario & David Borgatello and MarBorg for over 125 combined years of community business, service and philanthropy. The presentation of the award to these two extraordinary families and their businesses will be the highlight of the United for Literacy event being held at Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 6:00pm.

Each year, the Red Feather Ball raises money to support United Way's Fun in the Sun program, a seven week award winning summer enrichment program for disadvantaged youth, and the Reading plus program that serves over 3500 students from Lompoc to Carpinteria in 29 public schools, after-school programs and Fun in the Sun participants.  In 2011, 148 Fun in the Sun participants gained on average 2.1 grade levels using Reading Plus  These extraordinary results are being replicated all over the county thanks to United Way of Santa Barbara County, community partners, and generous supporters of Reading Plus.

This signature event has honored the Who's Who of business, volunteerism and philanthropy.  United Way of Santa Barbara County is proud to be honoring these two very special families and their community minded companies this year.

David Borgatello said it best, "Our parents were raised with the notion that a family sticks together. We just feel as if we have a larger family than most.  That is, the entire community of Santa Barbara. We support the good things our community members are doing because we want our family to be well".

Awards20th Day of Caring a Huge Success!

DoC
Volunteers from the City of Santa Barbara team at Day of Caring

On Saturday, September 17, 2011, United Way of Santa Barbara County held the 20th Annual Day of Caring volunteer event to kick-off its Community Campaign that raises pledges to support a local network of health, human, and community building services. At 8 a.m. volunteers gathered at the Ben Page Youth Center and enjoyed a breakfast, which was generously donated by Albertson's. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. volunteers helped local non-profit agencies with "hands-on" work assignments. Twenty-one Pacesetter Organizations that conducted their campaign before Day of Caring reported that to date over $250,000 in pledges had already been collected.

At the kick-off, the Dos Pueblos Drumline marched into the room, followed by the Santa Barbara City College Cheer Squad to rally volunteers and create excitement. After the San Marcos High School Madrigals sang the National Anthem, Congresswoman Lois Capps said a few heartfelt and encouraging words to the volunteers, who proceeded to their assignments in the community.

Over 1,600 volunteers participated, including young people from local schools, families, churches, community service groups and workplaces at over 64 sites across the Tri-counties. Some of the largest sites included Bohnett Park, Adams Elementary School, Dos Pueblos High School (Goleta Valley Beautiful) and Alpha Resource Center. Projects varied between landscape work, planting, painting, habitat restoration and office work throughout Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez. The work that was done in just four hours equals to more than $275,000 worth of improvements to the Santa Barbara Community.

We would like to thank our generous sponsors: ABC-Clio, Albertsons, Allied Waste, Ben Page Youth Center, Cottage Health System, Cox, Exxon Mobil, Home Improvement Center, K-Lite, La Arcada Investments, MarBorg Industries, Montecito Bank & Trust, Pacific Coast Business Times, ParentClick, Penfield & Smith Engineers, Raytheon, Sambo's Restaurant, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, The Daily Sound, The Santa Barbara Independent and Woodstocks.

NSLASummer Learning Loss Program of the Year!

Fun in the Sun participant

Fun in the Sun (FITS), a 7-week summer enrichment program for low-income, academically-at-risk students and their families was selected as a Top Ten Finalist for the National Award of Excellence for "Summer Learning Loss Program of the Year" by the National Summer Learning Association. FITS demonstrates positive academic and developmental youth outcomes and is inclusive in the summer planning process with community key stakeholders. 2011 marked the 15th year for FITS. In 1997, United Way of Santa Barbara County started FITS with a handful of local youth nonprofits and served 24 children, ages 6-12, at Ortega Park in Eastside Santa Barbara. Since then, FITS has served thousands of children and families, at a number of sites across the county, and to date, is the largest and longest running local collaboration with over 40 partners in Santa Barbara County. For 15 years, FITS has carried out UWSBC's mission and goals, but in addition has followed the recommended goals of educators and thousands of community members. No other summer program in the tri-counties provides development by dozens of the best public and private service providers in our community.

Fun in the Sun directly addresses Summer Learning Loss and the Achievement Gap through its comprehensive curriculum and prepares students for the new school year come fall. This past summer 148 FITS participants gained an average of +2.1 grade levels in reading improvement scores by using Reading Plus, part of United Way of Santa Barbara County's United for Literacy Initiative! Teachers and parents report that measurable results such as this only supplement the noticeable difference in the children's attitudes toward learning, reading and character, providing confident students ready to learn this fall in our local schools.

 Backpack500 Free Backpacks for Students

Santa Barbara Bank and Trust and United Way of Santa Barbara County at Franklin Elementary School

500 students across Santa Barbara County received free backpacks and school supplies. These back-to-school backpacks assist underserved and low-income students who are not able to afford a quality backpack and find themselves challenged with carrying their textbooks and other educational materials and supplies throughout the school year.

"Many students cannot afford a quality backpack that will last the full school year," said Ms. Jo Anne Caines, Principal of La Cumbre Jr. High. "By mid-school year, you see students with their textbooks literally falling from the bottoms of their backpacks or with ripped handles. It is difficult for these students to focus on learning when they are concerned about how they're going to bring their school books and supplies to class every day."

To address this issue, United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC), and Santa Barbara Bank & Trust (SBB&T) partnered on a program providing 500 free back-to-school backpacks filled with school supplies to 12 local schools throughout south Santa Barbara County, compliments of SBB&T.

Improving education is one of three major focus areas for UWSBC.   During the next 10 years, UWSBC will work to achieve community driven 10-year goals to increase local high school graduation rates and the number of students reading at or above grade level in every grade by 50%.

"Most of us remember well the excitement of starting the new school year with a new backpack and school supplies," said George S. Leis, President of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust. "Every student in our community deserves the chance to know how that feels and to not be worried about how they will carry their supplies back and forth to school. Some quality backpacks and basic school supplies will go a long way in making that first day a fun and positive experience and the school year just a little easier."
